The Among Us Update That Has Everyone Among Us Excited
The social deduction game, Among Us, has been climbing the gaming charts slowly and steadily. From 2.3 average players in November 2018 to 116,420.4 in November 2020, the game has surely made an exciting journey.
From PC players 🖥️ to mobile gamers 📱, Among Us has managed to capture our undivided attention - and that’s quite an achievement.
To sustain this high level of engagement, developers Innersloth have announced new updates and patch notes that promise the enhancement of the game content. This would be the first official major game update since the game touched its unprecedented popularity. So naturally, the stakes are pretty high, and everyone’s excited!
Let’s take a look at what we can expect.
Among Us: Typical Gameplay
Before getting into the changes, let’s quickly go over the regular gameplay.
Among Us players are assigned the status of a Crewmate or an Imposter at random. Based on this status, the former is tasked with detecting the Imposters, completing the mission, and of course, staying alive.
On the other hand, Imposters attempt to blend in with the Crewmates and kill them while deflecting the blame on players. 🐍🐍🐍
What’s New in Store?
According to co-founder Marcus Bromander, aka Puffballs United, the following updates are on the horizon for Among Us:
New Maps
The loudest buzz is around the announcement regarding the new stage in the game. Currently, you have only three maps - The Skeld, MIRA HQ, and Polus (which may feel pretty restrictive for seasoned gamers), with the latest one recently released in November.
As per the official release, the new map would be along the Henry Stickmin theme and is expected to be bigger than ever Polus! What’s even better is that the map will be available for free to all players and will contain a gamut of new tasks - so gear up!
The official Among Us Twitter handle offered a teaser of the map, and honestly, we can’t wait to get started!
For those who are unaware, Henry Stickmin is yet another wildly famous choose-your-adventure game by the developers. Given that Innersloth is combining two of their popular games is essentially Christmas arriving early for all gamers!
Bugs and Server Fixes
A big chunk of the update deals with all the technical issues that have been plaguing the gameplay. Given that addressing these bugs involved manipulating the original code, it will take the longest to execute and implement.
That being said, some of the game bugs that have been fixed are as under:
- Inaccurate admin tables in the Polus
- Camera flinging glitches in the security cams
- Access to Polus panels through the walls
- Seismic exploit and solo-complete reactor
- Softlock and engine exploit
- Temperature mini-game in the Polus (for iOS users)
Furthermore, the developers have given an assurance that they are working closely with Forte to resolve the server issues.
Mobile Ad Removal
What comes as an unprecedented move, the patch notes also talk about the temporary plan of removing ads from the mobile version of the game (the issue being the display of inappropriate ads).
However, before you get all excited, the ads are expected to make a reappearance in 2021. So make the most of the ad-free month of December! (And for those who have paid to remove the ads, you can be assured that the ads will be reinstated, and you will get your money’s worth!)
Colorblind Support
In an attempt to make the game more accessible, Among Us will offer Colorblind Support to its players. Before the announcement of this feature, certain elements in the gameplay, such as matching cables of the same color, posed a challenge to those with visual color deficiency.
The developers have now disclosed that they will incorporate other identifiers (such as symbols) supported with a wider color palette.
Friends/Account Systems
The developers also acknowledged the several requests for having friends and account systems where players could add others and play later.
They admitted that such an inclusion is critical to the game’s growth. At the same time, they have made it abundantly clear that you shouldn’t hold your breath for this update as it will take a considerable while. Regardless, it is nice to know that our voices are being heard!
Localization and Translations
Innersloth admitted that the game is available in a select few languages, with rough translations in some versions.
To accommodate a wider pool of gamers, the developers plan to rope in professional translations to release the game in multiple languages. The official list of compatible languages is not out yet, but let’s hope that they get working on it.
Other Miscellaneous Updates
Apart from the major plans in the pipeline and as cited above, here are a few other changes:
- Addition of anonymous voting where all votes will appear grey.
- Meeting Mode will now update only during bar meetings.
- Invisible Mode will remove the taskbar entirely.
- Cosmetic changes to the meeting screen.
- Comms sabotage will now clear the security logs (MIRA)
Are You Excited?
While everything about this latest update has us excited, the only bummer is that there is no clearly defined timeframe for the release of these updates. Plus, it is no secret that the development will be slow, considering that Innersloth (which is essentially a three-member team) has ambitious plans within a small timeframe.
Regardless, the idea that the game is continuously developing is enough for us to come back and get more of Among Us!
